O- is the universal donor because it lacks A, B, and Rh antigens, so donated O- red cells will not trigger an ABO or Rh immune response in any recipient.

Look up who can receive your blood type and who you can donate to across all eight ABO/Rh types — A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, AB-, O+, and O-. Select a type to see donate-to and receive-from results together, with compatible types highlighted and incompatible ones greyed out. Short summaries explain universal donor O-, universal recipient AB+, and how A, B, and Rh antigens affect matching. The layout is mobile-first with a swipeable summary strip, tap-friendly picker, and quick navigation between sections. For education only — hospitals always cross-match blood before transfusion.

How to Use Blood Type Compatibility Chart

Pick your blood type

Tap your ABO/Rh type in the selector at the top. All eight standard types are supported. This is the fastest way to look up compatibility for your own type or one you are studying.

Read donate and receive results together

Both answers appear at once — no flipping between modes. On desktop, donate-to and receive-from panels sit side by side. On mobile, they stack with a summary strip and bottom navigation to jump between sections.

Use the visual compatibility grid

Each panel uses a mini grid where compatible types are highlighted and incompatible types are faded — easier than scanning a dense yes/no table.

Check match counts and universal labels

Match counts show how many of the eight types work for donation and transfusion. O- and AB+ also get universal donor and universal recipient labels when selected.

Expand the biological explanation on mobile

Tap "Why these matches?" below each grid on phone to read the antigen and Rh-factor reasoning. On desktop, the full explanation is visible under each panel — for example why O- can donate to every type or why A+ can donate only to A+ and AB+.

Common Calculations & Examples

Example 1: What blood types can O negative donate to?

Problem: You have O- blood and want to know who can safely receive your donation.

Steps:

  1. Select O- in the blood type picker.
  2. Read the "Can donate to" panel and match count.
  3. Review the highlighted compatible types in the grid.
Result: All eight blood types are compatible because O- is the universal donor for red blood cell matching.

Explanation: O- red cells lack A, B, and Rh antigens, so they are less likely to trigger an immune reaction when given to recipients with other blood types.

Example 2: Who can AB positive receive blood from?

Problem: An AB+ patient needs to know which donor blood types are safe.

Steps:

  1. Select AB+ in the picker.
  2. Read the "Can receive from" panel.
  3. Check whether all eight donor types are highlighted.
Result: AB+ can receive from every blood type because it is the universal recipient in standard red cell compatibility charts.

Explanation: AB+ already has A, B, and Rh antigens on its red cells, so it does not attack those antigens when they appear on donor cells.

Example 3: Can A positive donate to B positive?

Problem: You want to check whether A+ is a compatible donor for a B+ recipient.

Steps:

  1. Select A+ as your blood type.
  2. Look at the donate-to grid and see whether B+ is highlighted.
  3. Read the summary explaining the antigen mismatch.
Result: B+ is incompatible because A+ can donate only to A+ and AB+.

Explanation: A+ carries A and Rh antigens that a B+ recipient may reject because B+ does not have the A antigen on its own red cells.

Example 4: Who can O negative receive blood from?

Problem: You need the strictest receive-from rules for an O- patient.

Steps:

  1. Select O- in the picker.
  2. Read the "Can receive from" panel.
  3. Note that only one donor type is highlighted.
Result: O- can receive only from O- donors.

Explanation: Because O- lacks A, B, and Rh antigens, receiving cells with any of those antigens can cause a dangerous transfusion reaction.

Example 5: Can O positive donate to A negative?

Problem: You are checking Rh and ABO rules for an O+ donor and A- recipient.

Steps:

  1. Select O+ in the blood type picker.
  2. Check whether A- appears in the donate-to compatible list.
  3. Read the Rh-factor note in the summary.
Result: A- is not a compatible recipient for O+ donation in this chart.

Explanation: O+ can donate to O+, A+, B+, and AB+ — all Rh-positive recipients. A- is Rh-negative and is not included in the O+ donate list.
